OPA | Guardianship as a last resort: Exploring alternatives

This workshop explores how NDIS Support Coordinators, service providers and families can support people with disability to make their own decisions.
Everyone has the right to make their own decisions and to receive the support they need to do so.
A guardian or administrator may only be appointed where there is no less restrictive alternative to promote and protect their human rights.
In this workshop we will:
• Discuss the empowerment of people with disability when thinking about guardianship and administration processes.
• Talk about relevant legislation and policy (Disability Discrimination Act, Guardianship and Administration Act and NDIS Supported Decision-Making Policy).
• Explore some of the findings of the Disability Royal Commission.
• Share and discuss relevant case studies.
