SUMMARY:National Palliative Care Week 2022
DESCRIPTION:National Palliative Care Week  (NPCW)\, held from 22 – 28 May 2022\, is Australia’s largest annual awareness-raising initiative held to increase understanding of the many benefits of palliative care.  \nWe are pleased to announce the theme for National Palliative Care Week 2022 is It’s your right. The theme seeks to raise awareness about the rights of all Australians to access high-quality palliative care when and where they need it. One of the great myths about palliative care is that it is only a synonym for end-of-life care. It is so much more than that.  Anyone with a life-limiting illness has the right to live as well as possible\, for as long as possible.   \nFrom Sunday 22 – Saturday 28 May 2022\, virtual and face-to-face events will be held across the country to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment and dedication of all those working and volunteering in the palliative care sector across Australia.   \nNow in its 27th year\, and traditionally held in the last full week of May\, NPCW is organised by Palliative Care Australia (PCA) and supported by the Australian Government Department of Health.   \nWe look forward to having more conversations in the community during NPCW about the benefits of quality palliative care. \nDuring NPCW we hope to spark important conversations in the community about the benefits of quality palliative care and celebrate the amazing dedication of all those working and volunteering in palliative care across Australia. \nHelp PCA raise awareness via social media using the campaign resources and events form. Join the NPCW conversation using the hashtags #NPCW2022 and #palliativecare.

SUMMARY:Swinburne University of Technology\, Wellbeing Clinic for Older Adults | Trauma-focussed treatments with older adults
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will describe what is known from the research about how trauma presents in older adults and those with dementia\, provide practical advice for delivering trauma-focussed treatments\, and discuss adaptations to therapy that may be required for this population. Attendees will gain pragmatic skills in assessing and responding to trauma-related needs. More than 70% of older people have experienced a psychologically traumatic event in their lives. Events that occur in late-life can trigger traumatic stress symptoms\, and older people can experience the re-emergence of previously well-managed traumatic stress. Symptoms may appear differently than in younger people\, especially in the presence of co-morbid cognitive impairment. It is essential that mental health professionals understand how to identify\, assess\, and treat traumatic stress symptoms. \nAbout the Presenter \nMonica Cations is a registered psychologist and epidemiologist who has worked in the ageing and dementia field for over a decade. Her research is translational with a focus on psychological wellbeing in aged care environments and young people using aged care. Monica is a Senior Research Fellow in the College of Education\, Psychology and Social Work at Flinders University\, supported by an NHMRC/MRFF Emerging Leadership Investigator Grant.

SUMMARY:Gwandalan National Palliative Care Project | Torres Strait Islander Palliative Care Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Gwandalan: Supporting Palliative Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities \nSpirituality plays an important role in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture with many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people possessing strong beliefs about the existence of life beyond the physical realm. Life and death are viewed as a continuous cycle from birth to death to re-birth; the life\, death\, life pattern. \nIn some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities\, speaking of death is considered taboo. Given the cultural sensitivities surrounding death\, it is important that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural beliefs and practices are acknowledged and accommodated during the palliative and end-of-life care journey. \n‘Gwandalan’ is a word from the Darkinjung and Awaba language meaning rest\, peace or resting place. For this project\, the Gwandalan word represents the spiritual aspect of the palliative and end-of-life journey\, with the hope that the spirit is at rest and peace as a result of good palliative care and a ‘good death’.
